On the Record is a project dedicated to documenting and preserving the stories of (South) African artists, curators, critics and collectors, to offer a first hand account of the making and meaning of art practices. This biannual audio journal aims at capturing the voices of those who shaped the artistic and cultural landscape of (South) Africa. The journal is thus aimed at producing an archive for future consideration and research, and to nurture the heritage of artistic creativity in (South) Africa and its diaspora.
This audio journal will include recordings of interviews with artists and curators, commentary by artists on their works, documentation of major art events, collaborations with artists, sound performances and other sound works. The journal thus explores the artistic potential of recorded sound to map histories, and artworks, and to provide a comprehensive archive of artists’ voices.
