slow release is invested in the impossibility of containment, evidenced in enclosures from the Wardian case, Crystal Palace, the Biosphere 2, to aquariums and vivariums in natural history museums. Against enclosure’s logics, this project opens toward the untethered: to spirits, forces, and materials that live and exceed beyond systems of capture and control. Through readings, sound works, and musical impressions, slow release meditates on entanglements of time, material, and memory. It considers living matter and organisms as processes; and the subterranean as carriers of stories and conduits of knowledge.

Notes on Cuts is a vinyl record+book project that researches the complexity of music censorship in South Africa during apartheid by exploring records that were ph`ysically cut by state broadcasters to prevent them from being heard. Notes on Cuts delves into the histories of listening by directly confronting their censored and controlled forms. The censors' scratches and cuts are held up for visual analysis, and then listened to, in order to find what secrets they may reveal. These are literal scars into the black plastic that hold the sounds and notes of songs meant to be enjoyed, celebrated, and danced to, but once forbidden.
Written and recorded by art historian and scholar John Peffer, the project offers creative and critical understandings into the history of South Africa’s radio broadcast services, and listens closely to the bureaucracy of censorship under the apartheid regime. Peffer’s reflective notes provide insight into governmental decisions to censure as a means of control by a close looking and listening to a selection of songs and albums.

12 inch vinyl record, transparent blue without extruder, PVC bag with flapCast is a transcription disc of a free-form episode of the radio show Luna Park by Geraldine de María. A record in four chapters – vinyl record, glass, ceramic and lacquer vinyl – Cast delves into the politics of the night, exploring the shifts of nocturnal rhythms and the acoustic im print of a city under the pressures of a global pandemic.
The radio broadcast trapped in the grooves of this record circulates differently, passing through hands instead of airwaves, and pays tribute to the transcription disc, a particular phonograph record intended for radio broadcast. Cast treats the space of the record as an exhibitionary site and features curatorial notes in the form of audio inscription, transposing the curatorial into grooves. We don’t have walls; we have grooves.

The first experimental Joining Room/Nothing to Commit Recods platform will inhabit the Centre for the Less Good Idea under the title, writing for the eye, writing for the ear. For Season 3, the curators, Bettina Malcomess and Bhavisha Panchia bring together a group of artistic practitioners, mu- sicians and perfomers to produce a series of works across the sonic and the visual.

what is left of what has left takes the form of a 12-inch vinyl record album comprised of works by artists, DJs and musicians. Constituting a meeting place of voices, ideas and propositions, the record brings together works that bear witness to various modalities of black sonic and cultural formations from within the contemporary African diaspora. The record draws upon rapidly evolving sonic lineages to explore the rupture and mutation of sound and music over time and space– through histories of migration and displacement, as well as through the use of vocoders, samplers, synthesizers and music software appli- cations. what is left of what has left foregrounds the influence of sound on the production and shaping of social and cultural identities of African diasporas, demonstrating how the sonic comes to figure a sense of place and belonging, and our relationship with both past and present.
